Local historian Stanley Newman looks back over the design, planning, building and consecration of the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit on Stag Hill. May marked the 50 th anniversary of the consecration of Guildford Cathedral, at its imposing location on Stag Hill. In , Guildford separated from the Diocese of Winchester to form its own diocese, with Holy Trinity Church on the High Street acting as a temporary cathedral church, but it was clearly not large enough for the size of the new diocese.

A diocesan conference in May decided that a new cathedral should be built within the borough of Guildford. Although all three were turned down, there was quite a debate regarding the Stoke Park site. The corporation responded with the suggestion that as the park was in the process of passing into the possession of the town, a site there should be reserved for a cathedral.

The school had an anxious period anticipating that a massive structure would be built that would loom over their building and grounds. However, when the corporation eventually took ownership of the park it decided there was insufficient land available anyway for a cathedral.

Although plans for the proposed cathedral were subsequently approved, a suitable location was still to be found. In , the Fifth Earl of Onslow came to the rescue when he donated the land at the top of Stag Hill, which turned out to be a perfect location for the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit.

Unfortunately, a problem arose later when the land on the sides of the hill around the summit were to be sold off in separate lots. His gift was to commemorate the association between Canada and the Diocese of Guildford in two world wars. In the conflict thousands of Canadian soldiers were stationed in the area. One of the principal camps was at Witley.

During the war, the first 7, Canadian soldiers to arrive in England were quartered at nearby Aldershot, within the Diocese of Guildford. Construction work on the cathedral eventually began in , when the first of concrete piles were driven into the clay of Stag Hill to a depth of 50ft. Each pile weighed five tons; therefore their total weight was 3, tons, and if laid in a line, they would have extended to between 22 and 23 miles. There were approximately 10, people on Stag Hill that day to witness this historic event.

The Guildford diocese was created in , however the designated Parish Church Cathedral soon proved too small for the growing congregation and plans for a new cathedral were laid.

With Britain in the midst of the 's economic depression the fund raising project was boosted by the donation of six acres of land atop Stag Hill. The hill a former Royal hunting ground has commanding views and was given by the 5th Earl of Onslow. An architectural competition was held during and won by Sir Edward Maufe.

Maufe, later engaged by the War Graves Commission, had already designed several parish churches and was designing St John's at Hook at the time he won the competition. It is the only cathedral to have been built on a new site in Southern England since the 16th Century reformation.
